Piping on the Green, Birthday Traditions, and Peekaboo

February 6, 2018 By Mark Chism Leave a Comment

Traditions add sanity to often crazy schedule. With 6 birthdays in 3 weeks my wife suggested the previous year a camping opportunity combined with Celtic music. This year we had 2 campers participating expanding participation.

Celtic Music

It starts with a one day celebration of Celtic heritage. Piping on the Green provides a jam-packed event in covering dance, arts and crafts and music. It is held at The Celtic Cup Coffee House, a restaurant and coffee house in Tullahoma, Tennessee. The annual festival provides a one day blast containing many facets of Celtic culture,  a glimpse into the past and present. This day, the festival concluded with an introduction to a group from Texas, “Scotland Rising”, is a demonstration of what four individuals take traditional instruments, drums and bagpipes, to a new level.

Preparing to Celebrate

Returning to our sites at Old Stone Fort State Park for birthday celebrations, we are amid bubbles and a campfire. Event then erupted into a wonderful birthday celebration for all involved. It was capped by a peekaboo session on the steps of the camper where my 2 year old granddaughter joined my father-in-law, her great-Grandpa, on his perch. The bathroom door and mirror turn into an hour long peekaboo session entertaining us all. It was only complete with the family heading for home, but a memory for all. This State Park is a treasure among all of the various State Parks in Tennessee.

Traditions, Old and New

Like the hand print which lingered for months on a mirror, traditions are important opportunities to share and exchange and as time goes by and families grow and change, so do traditions of the past. New traditions will start and existing traditions may change and some will pass away. Generations should adapt and include new and old as bridges to the past. No matter how hard we try things will change and we must accept what comes our way as individuals and as families.

God has created us as individuals of his making and we should never let anyone take this from us.
