Home Adventures Houston Family Vacation – Baby Elephant

Houston Family Vacation – Baby Elephant

August 13, 2017 By Mark Chism Leave a Comment

Baby Elephant in HoustonAs a planned extension to a PM training at a University in Houston, my family drove down to meet me in Texas. It was an opportunity to explore the attractions there locally. With some time and an abundance of opportunities to explore, we planned to see the sites.

After a good sleep, we took a day to tour Space Center Houston. The tour was an opportunity to see rockets, explore a space shuttle, International Space Station modules and see the historic NASA Johnson Space Center. This served as an exclamation point to a early morning shuttle launch witnessed months before on another journey. The space shuttle simulator made it an incredible experience which will not soon be forgotten. It is an important element of our childhood bridging to the space shuttle program our children know.

Houston Unplanned Visit

That evening on the local news was an announcement that the 2 week old baby elephant was on display at the Houston Zoo. This meant my wife who loves everything elephants believed that an unplanned trip to the zoo was required. We decided to split the next day adding the afternoon zoo adventure.

We started the next day with a trip to the San Jacinto Monument. This serves as an introduction to Texas history and key players from 1836. After the museum the view from the top of the tower is amazing. The city is in the distance and the lovely surrounding terrain of the battlefield. A fitting tribute.

Baby Elephant

Next, an afternoon at the Houston Zoo. We made our way through other exhibits on a mission to find the elephants. As we came up on the elephant enclosure my wife spied the baby between elephants. We spent the next hour finding angles to photograph the baby elephant. And finally we viewed the remaining exhibits making our way to the exit.

This was an opportunity to tour Houston. It included key attractions while not exhausting opportunities for future visits.
