My oldest was a pre-college student at Vanderbilt studying classical guitar. Including one in Columbus, GA. During a first visit there with my oldest son and I discovered several attractions that might interest the family. The following year provided an opportunity to see some of them.
The National Civil War Naval Museum is an engaging look at naval assets and strategies for both the Confederacy and Union troops. It includes artifacts and demonstrations to bring experiences to life. This museum includes a timeline and anaconda plan notes and also shows that the War Between The States was as much about naval forces as it was land battles. Artifacts are presented in a means that allows context to be understood. A museum in hundreds of miles from any ocean, but well worth a trip. This is my most recommended museum.
Opportunity to Visit Museums
Butterfly conservatories have been a family favorite. The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center provided a treat for the entire family. The brightly colored butterflies are exciting along with the hatching eggs and caterpillars helped to demonstrate the importance of the environment. Another intriguing piece was the outdoor butterfly plants allowing us to understand how easy it is to plant items which attract and support local butterfly populations.
Another stop near the butterfly center is the Ida Cason Callaway Chapel which contains a A. E. Schluter Pipe Organ. The chapel is built to enhance the organ inside. I purchased a CD of the music played there. It would be well worth the trip to see a concert. We were not fortunate enough to see a concert.
However, we found Columbus to be well worth the trip. We have only scratched the surface of things to see in the town.
