I tend to plan trips 9 months to a year in advance. Due to an intense travel schedule ahead and airline points carrying over providing opportunity and discovered that a flight to Halifax, Canada might be possible, even though Charlottetown, Canada was too expensive. The 150 mile drive trip was possible, but no Marriott hotels except in Halifax. My wife was open to trying a Bed and Breakfast on PEI so with the spreadsheet ready, the Anne of Green Gables adventure begins.
Entering PEI
We land and make our way to the Residence Inn by Marriott in Halifax, NS. The next day we make the drive to the island. We enter the island by way of the Confederation Bridge and get the glimpse of the red island. This begins with a stop at the information area on the island and thus begins the visit to the home of Anne of Green Gables. We made our way across the island to the Barchois Inn in Rustico for 3 nights.
We spent the next day immersed in all things Anne. This included a stop at the house said to inspire L. M. Montgomery to author the series. We took a horse carriage by the pond to the shore near the house. We went to the Fisherman’s Wharf for supper followed by that evening we went to the Cavendish National Park beach and saw kits playing beside the road and a beautiful sunset.
So many Lighthouses
Next day was an expedition to the east. We went in search of singing sands and found East Point Lighthouse. Built in 1867 the octagonal wooden lighthouse has artifacts on each level and a clear view of three bodies of water (Gulf of St Lawerence, Atlantic Ocean, Northumberland Straight) coming together which fascinated my wife.
We continued down the east coast of the island and found Basin Head and the singing sands. We also stopped at the Basin Head Fisheries Museum where we found a wonderful collection of artifacts related to this area of the island and the culture.
The next morning we went to the Farmers Bank of Rustico Museum and Douchet House. This is a collection of artifacts and insights into life on the island dating back 200 years. We moved across the island to Charlottetown at the Colonial Charm Inn for 2 nights. The Bed and Breakfast was within easy walking distance from Confederation Landing and downtown. We went to see Anne of Green Gables – The Musical at Confederation Centre for the Arts
Must See the Musical
Next day we took a seal tour and lobster trap pull with the Peakes Wharf Boat Tour. That evening we decided to go see Anne & Gilbert – The Musical. It was a great ending to the Anne adventure.
Next day we traveled back to the Residence Inn in Halifax leaving the western half of PEI (Prince Edward Island) for a future visit.
